Pressure increases on Australian GP date change

Pressure increases on Australian GP date change

The Australian Grand Prix could be moved from Phillip Island, or scrapped altogether, if a solution to a proposed date change is not found.

The future of the MotoGP Australian Grand Prix remains in doubt as Dorna and organisers at Phillip Island continue to clash over a change in the race's calendar date.

Carmelo Ezpeleta has been adamant that MotoGP will not return to Phillip Island beyond 2011 unless organisers agree to a move that will see the event occur earlier than its traditional October slot.

The pressure from Dorna has been prompted by the onslaught of poor weather conditions at the Melbourne venue in recent years, with cool temperatures, wind and rain causing particular problems for the riders.

However, organisers aren't keen to see the event pushed up the calendar due to the proximity with its other headline event, the World Superbike Championship, which usually takes place in February.

Indeed, while Australian Grand Prix corporation chairman Ron Walker has been active in working with Dorna, Ezpeleta insists there is only one solution.

"Ron Walker told me in an email that he would come back to me as soon as possible with dates for 2012," Ezpeleta told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"In 2010, we were very close to cancelling the race. If all the weekend the weather was like Friday, which could happen, then we cannot run the event.

"This is the matter we are discussing, and it is not just the rain, but the problem at Phillip Island is rain and the cold and then the tyres are not up to temperature. The riders have strongly requested to us to change the date.

"Our position has not changed at all. 'We want the race moving to earlier in the year for 2012, and the corporation is aware of our position."

The MotoGP safety commission, led by Valentino Rossi, have also led calls for the race to be moved to a more suitable summer date.

Spanish MotoGP, Jerez Friday Practice:

Stoner fastest overall, already under Jerez lap record

From motogp.com:

Stoner fastest overall, already under Jerez lap record

Friday, 1 April 2011

It was once again a Repsol Honda Team one-two after the first day of running for the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend with Casey Stoner setting the fastest combined time from the two practice sessions ahead of Dani Pedrosa.
Bridgestone: Stoner fastest overall, already under Jerez lap record

In the morning session, Stoner and Pedrosa were the only two riders to lap faster than the existing lap record, set by Pedrosa in 2010, and after only 45 minutes on track the pair were just 0.3seconds from last year’s pole time. In the cooler morning session, almost all riders tried both the softer and harder option slicks but in the afternoon, as the temperature rose, it was the harder option slicks that were preferred.

Track conditions were good today, although a strong wind hit the region in the afternoon which was a factor in making the afternoon laptimes a little slower.

Third fastest for the Ducati Team was a resurgent Valentino Rossi ahead of fellow countryman Marco Simoncelli of San Carlo Honda Gresini, with Factory Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo in fifth. The top seven riders all set their fastest lap of the day in the morning session, but Randy de Puniet and Nicky Hayden, who were eighth and ninth respectively, went faster during free practice two.

The final free practice session gets underway at 10:10hrs local time tomorrow, Saturday 2 April, before an hour of qualifying in the afternoon. Whilst conditions today were fine and warm, the weather is expected to deteriorate over the weekend.

Quote
“Track conditions were good today, especially this morning, and the times at the front were already very fast. Riders got the chance to try both the softer and harder option front and rear slicks today in assessment for the race, although tyre choice on Sunday could be more affected by the weather conditions with the current forecasts. The times were a little slower this afternoon because the wind got considerably stronger, but throughout today we have seen that consistency and durability are good. This morning the air was warm but the track was still quite cool, yet we could see that the harder option slicks were working well despite the temperature and the laptimes were very fast. Many riders tried both specs in the morning and performance of each was good. As the track temperature rose by the afternoon, almost all riders chose the harder specs for FP2. I can also say that braking stability of both front tyre specs is adequate, so in general I am happy with tyre performance here today.”

Lorenzo wins MotoGP, Stoner lets fly

From AAP via Yahoo!7 Sport:

Lorenzo wins MotoGP, Stoner lets fly

April 4, 2011

Casey Stoner let fly at race officials after losing his early world championship lead during a wet and wild Spanish Grand Prix.

Seven-times world champion Valentino Rossi apologised to Stoner after wiping out Australia's pole-sitter while trying to pass him on the slippery Jerez Circuit.

After winning the season-opening Qatar GP last month for Honda, Stoner led Sunday's race with 20 laps to go when he and Rossi clashed and crashed to the track.

While Jorge Lorenzo went on to take the race from fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, Stoner was unable to continue.

Rossi, who eventually finished fifth, immediately entered the Honda garage at the end of the race to apologise to Stoner.

"You had something with your shoulder did you?" Stoner said to the Italian, smiling.

"Obviously your ambition outweighs your talent."

Stoner, though, was less pleased with the marshals, who helped Rossi remount his bike to join the action while the Australian was left to unsuccessfully attempt to restart his Honda on his own.

"With the accident, I heard Valentino arriving and I wasn't worried about anyone passing me at that point in the race so I gave him plenty of room," Stoner said.

"It was a racing incident and there's not much we can do.

"What is more frustrating is the reaction of the stewards and their assistance for Valentino and not for me - it was unbelievable."

Rossi told Italia1 television: "It's completely my mistake and I have to say sorry to Casey.

"I know that he's very angry because he didn't make any mistakes. I went straight to say sorry."

Defending world champion Lorenzo was a much happier figure than Stoner.

"It was a hard race but I am happy with the win," Lorenzo said. "We had some luck, without the fall of Stoner we would not have won."

Riding for Yamaha, Lorenzo was 19.339 seconds faster than Pedrosa, who recovered his starting second place after falling to ninth early on.

"At the beginning everyone passed me, but I thought everyone was going too fast and was able to come back," said Pedrosa, who will undergo surgery on his collarbone on Monday.

After Stoner's mishap, Marco Simoncelli took over the lead until he too crashed four laps later and had to retire.

American Nicky Hayden finished third, 29.085 seconds off the pace, at the 4.4km Jerez Circuit.

"It was complicated, but I got a few breaks out there," Hayden said.

After two races, Lorenzo leads the championship with 45 points, Pedrosa is second with 36, with Stoner is third with 25.

In the Moto2 category, Italy's Andrea Iannone was first with Thomas Luthi over seven seconds behind. Simone Corsi completed the podium, over 12 seconds behind.

In the 125cc class, Spanish rider Nicolas Terol won his second straight race ahead of Jonas Folger and Johann Zarco.
The next race is the Portugal GP on May 1.

Unbelievable.............

I thought it was very poor form from the marshals last night, not something you would see anywhere else in the world, definitely not in Australia....

What Stoner said to Rossi after Jerez crash...
This is what Casey Stoner said to Valentino Rossi when the Italian apologised for taking the Australian out of the Spanish MotoGP after a botched overtake for second place on lap 8 of 27.

Rossi rejoined to finish fifth, while new Repsol Honda rider Stoner - who won from pole at round one in Qatar, and was on pole again at Jerez - was forced to retire.

Rossi went to find Stoner in the Repsol Honda pits after the race and they shook hands, then...

Stoner (smiling): “How's your shoulder? Is it okay?”

Rossi (helmet still on): “I'm very sorry.”

Stoner: “Okay. You have some problem with your shoulder?”

Rossi: “I make a mistake”

Stoner: “Yeah. Obviously your ambition outweighed your talent.”

Rossi: “Eh?”

Stoner: “Ambition is more than the talent.”

Rossi: “I'm very sorry.”

Stoner: “No problem.”

That was one of the best races I've seen in a long time (despite the fact Stoner got taken out :pissed:), was so unpredictable. Though I feel sorry for Simonchelli who was doing a brilliant job out the front.

Stoner fastest in French MotoGP practice

Former world champion Casey Stoner was fastest in both of Friday's practice sessions for Sunday's French MotoGP.

The Australian, who won the opening race of the season in Qatar, led a Honda one-two-three in both sessions with Marco Simoncelli and Dani Pedrosa finishing second and third at Le Mans.

Stoner's fastest lap of one minute 33.782 seconds in the afternoon session was 0.404 seconds faster than Italian Simoncelli, while Pedrosa failed to improve on his morning time of 1:34.431, with the afternoon session taking place in conditions considerably hotter than the morning.

Nicky Hayden, on a Ducati, claimed the fourth fastest time with Yamaha's defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo, the winner at Le Mans in 2009 and 2010, in fifth place.

Sixth was Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda), who has finished on the podium six times at Le Mans.

Colin Edwards took seventh place on his Yamaha, with Hiroshi Aoyama eighth, former world champion Valentino Rossi ninth and Ben Spies 10th.

After three rounds of the 2011 world championship standings, Lorenzo leads the way with 65 points, four ahead of Pedrosa, with Stoner another 20 points behind in third place.

Speaking about his performance, second-placed Simoncelli told the official MotoGP website: "I am happy because we have taken a positive step from the morning to the afternoon. We have improved by almost a second and that is a lot.

Casey Stoner on pole as Lorenzo struggles in French MotoGP

From news.bbc.co.uk:

Casey Stoner on pole as Lorenzo struggles in French MotoGP

Casey Stoner continued to dominate in Le Mans as the Repsol Honda rider secured pole for the French MotoGP.

Stoner, who broke the track record in the practice sessions, pipped Marco Simoncelli by 0.06 secs with Andrea Dovizioso completing the front row.

But Yamaha's championship leader Jorge Lorenzo had to settle for fifth, one place ahead of Britan's Cal Crutchlow.

With Dani Pedrosa also on the second row, six-time champion Valentino Rossi had to settle for ninth in qualifying.

While Lorenzo and Ducati's Rossi had the Pyrrhic victories of being the fastest riders for their bike manufacturer, the pace of Honda, who secured the top four positions, will be a huge concern.

Although Spaniard Lorenzo leads the standings by four points from Pedrosa with Stoner a further 20 back in third, he was more than half a second behind Stoner's pole-setting lap of one minute 33.153 seconds.

And reigning champion Lorenzo was only 0.1 secs ahead of British rookie Crutchlow, the Monster Yamaha rider out-qualifying team-mate Colin Edwards.

With Edwards seventh, the top 10 was completed by Ben Spies in eighth and Rossi's Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden 10th.

Stoner's pole - his third of the season - came on the day that organisers for the French MotoGP announced a new five-year deal, Le Mans having already hosted the event for the past 10 years.

Casey Stoner wins French MotoGP to move into second in overall standings

May 16, 2011

AUSTRALIA'S Casey Stoner earned his second victory of the season at a dramatic French MotoGP which saw Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa fracture his collarbone in a high-speed crash.

Stoner climbed to second place in the overall standings with the win, and is now just 12 points behind defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo of Spain.

Italian Andrea Dovizioso finished second, 14.214 seconds behind Stoner, with multiple world champion Valentino Rossi coming in third to earn his first podium of the season.

Pedrosa had the better of polesitter Stoner from the start, but the Australian retook the lead on the second lap before Pedrosa's crash in a battle for second place.

Stoner opened up a gap of 2.20 seconds on Pedrosa at the halfway stage to pull away and cruise to victory, the Spaniard's race ending on lap 18 after a collision with Italian Marco Simoncelli.

Simoncelli attempted an audacious move by passing Pedrosa on the outside of a curve, but he clipped his rival's front wheel.

Simoncelli was given a ride-through penalty but managed to finish fifth, Lorenzo coming home in fourth to retain the overall lead.

Stoner, the 2007 world champion, was also fined $5,000 for punching French rider Randy De Puniet in the shoulder during the morning warm-up.
