Adelaide Film Festival - SENNA - Australian Premiere
« on: February 02, 2011, 03:30:26 pm »
Hi All,

Just a heads up - SENNA - will be screening on 2 occasions (Sun 27 Feb @ 3:00pm & Sun 6 March @ 1:30pm) for the Adelaide Film Festival.

"Get your motor racing with Sport Docs at the 2011 BigPond Adelaide Film Festival (BAFF)! If you can drive it or ride it, you can race it at the limits of endurance. BAFF presents the Australian premiere of Senna (dir: Asif Kapadia AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE), which tells the story of the monumental life and tragic death of legendary Brazilian motor-racing Champion, Ayrton Senna. Spanning the decade from his arrival in Formula One in the mid 1980s, the film follows Senna's struggles both on track against his nemesis, French World Champion Alain Prost, and off it, against the politics which infest the sport. Sublime, spiritual yet, on occasion, ruthless - Senna conquers and transcends Formula One to become a global superstar. Yet he is struck down in his prime on the blackest weekend in the history of the sport, watched live on television by 300 million people. Years on he is revered in Formula One as the greatest motor racing driver of all time - and in Brazil as a Saint."

Note : You'll have to set up an basic account before you can purchase tickets.

More Information at the  Adelaide Film Festival Site - http://tix.adelaidefilmfestival.org/session3.asp?sn=Senna.

Cheers

Well I went to the premiere today, it was a great movie and highly recommend it. Preimiere was full of motorsport fans and it got an ovation at the end.

I had a few issues with the editing. Alot of the movie is subtitled as the interviews and footage are mostly in brazilan and japanese (and some footage where they put them in cos you can't hear clearly over the engine) but the subtitles were quite small for a cinema compared to other movies. On screen text was made to look like the text of that era shown TV to fit in with the timing etc. Not only did it stand out that it wasn't part of the original broadcast but had alot of situations where they put white text on a white background.

That was the only real complaint I had, it started from his first season in F1 and moved around quickly but I guess they had alot to fit in. Some quite funny moments and footage I doubt has been shown for a long time if at all. Had alot of footage from drivers briefings which were all highlights. Alot of footage that I'm sure people will talk about but I won't ruin anything here.

There is one more screening for the festival in Adelaide but it will probably show up at the Nova for a few weeks afterwards.

I was there as well and, for the anoraks, there was nothing new bar the footage from foreign television and some extraordinary FIA footage never before seen, however the story was driven by personalities, their characteristics and emotions rather than the cut and dry of tracks and races.

Agree with everything Prophet ][ mentioned and the subtitles were ridiculously small for a big screen. The other thing was that we are obviously spoilt with the F1 transmission image quality nowadays ( Bring on HD !!  ) but a lot of the archival footage was almost unwatchable on a big screen.

I really enjoyed it. For the fans, another dimension to a well known story.

I've seen the 162 minute uncut version of this film. It's a fantastic documentary with great music throughout. Really well done, edge of your seat stuff. 10/10

I think the cut version doesn't show all of the interviews with the journalists working at the time and Alain Prost who gives great insight into Senna's character throughout and is funny at times, which is a real shame. Don't know why they just couldn't release the uncut version to cinemas.

Hey guys, Village Cinemas confirmed with me that they won't be screening this movie (even though they have it on their soon to be released list), as they don't believe there's enough interest in it!!??? Very, very dissapointing.

There's still a chance that they could change their mind. Anyone in VIC, NSW or TAS interested in viewing this on the big screen, please send an enquiry via the link below, ask for screening times and express your (and your friends, family, neighbours, ect, ect) desire to view this film if it was to show. Worth a shot.  :crossed:

It's playing at the Palace cinemas (or at least some of them) here in Brisvegas.

I went to see it this morning. It's an excellent doco; a great reminder of what a unique personality and talent "magic boy" (which was Alain Prost's nickname for him) was........

......... and what a total arsehole Balestre was.

A must see film for any F1 fan.

I saw it a week or two ago, I was a bit disappointed by it. I'm surprised they didn't get Gerhard Berger in it, some of the stories around when he and Senna were team mates are rather funny, wouldn't have minded hearing anything Berger would have to say about Senna.

Their was no mention about the reformation of the GPDA which I believe Senna was someone who really pushed for it the morning after Ratzenberger's death which was the same day he himself was killed - in fact Senna was appointed as one of the three directors of the GPDA.

I couldn't believe what an ass Balestre was...and I thought Mosley and the FIA of the '00s was bad.

That being said, I really enjoyed it up until the point where I realized the 1994 season had just started and what was about to happen that kinda put a downer on it but that was expected.

I got the impression that the film tried to steer clear of detailing the mechanics of the politics to make the film a bit more accessible to non-revheads. The film came across as an illustration of the personal impact(s) of what was going on with Senna and with the racers around him (Prost, in other words).

As for the history of the period; you are spot on with that I reckon.

Many of you guys disliked Mosely, but Balestre was far worse, and hated by many.

I have had an elevated opinion of Mosely since I learned of his efforts in subsidising costs to those taking legal action against News Ltd for hacking their phones
The doco is an absolute ripper....those shots of Senna and Belestra in the drivers meetings were an eye opener, a multi Billion dollar business being run by a clown like that made it very easy for Bernie to walk in

Berger is very quiet since his blue with Mateschitz & Colonel Klink over STR,hardly ever see a public statement.
