A 5.2 magnitude quake has hit near Bowen in North Queensland, and was felt from Airlie beach, down to Townsville.
The United States Geological Survey says the quake struck 10km below the surface, about 124 kilometres from Townsville, just after 3:30pm (AEST).
The tremor was also felt in Mackay.
There are no reports of damage.
Just eighteen minutes later, a 5.3 magnitude aftershock hit Christchurch in New Zealand.
No casualties have been reported, but power has been cut across the city.
The 5.49pm quake was centred 10km northeast of Diamond Harbour, at a depth of 11km and was felt strongly in Christchurch, GNS reported. It was also felt in Timaru.
Christchurch remains devastated following a magnitude 6.3 quake on February 22, which claimed an estimated 181 lives.
That quake followed a magnitude 7.1 quake last September 4.
