Auscar Will It Make A Come Back?
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:45:20 pm »
I have been watching some Thunder dome Action from Calder Park Speedway back in the 80's

And i am just wondering with Marcos Ambrose now in Stock car land and more Australians are getting into the sport. And with now a few more Sprint Cup Drivers making a trip Down Under....

With all this news going on about Nascar do you think Auscar will ever make a come back and if so do you think it will be a big one?

To me i would like to see it come back as it will be a new experience for Australian's and would be great for Australian Motorsport as for drivers who can make there name in Auscar might have a better chance getting into Nascar.

What do you guys reckon? Do you guys think it will EVER Make a come back at all?

I hope it does, i think there has been some talk about it latley...

the thunder dome will have to have an upgrade, and for that to happen i think it will need an Indy race

As a matter of interest a group has been formed, in Victoria I think, to gather together information on the NASCAR type cars that ran back in the 80s
They ran mainly at the Thunderdome, but also at AIR, at Surfers in support of the Champ cars and at Waneroo and either Oran Park or Eastern Creek in Sydney on occaisions.
Stricktly speaking the name AUSCAR was applied to the "junior" division Commodores and Falcons that ran as supports for the imported Chev, Pontiac, Buick, Ford and Dodge NASCARS.
The group that has been formed are calling themselves the Historic Stock Car Group and are mainly interested in the NASCAR type units.

Cool sounds like good news i think the word on the street is that they may be building a Speedway on the Gold Coast for some Stock Car Events!  :)

Apparently the Historic Stock Cars (NASCAR) have a possibility of a run at the Shannons Nationals at QR (July or August?) and, if they can get enough cars together, at the Muscle Car Masters, Fathers day at Eastern Creek. :crossed:

I thought a number of those old nascars were gutted/sold off/modified to a different category, or am I thinking of the auscars ?

I always remember the problems we had at Indy the years they ran them there, everything after them was delayed due to the track cleanups after the nascars.

It wasn't that long ago that the NASCAR series was running.  I remember watching them support the F1 in Albert Park in 2000.

Wasn't AUScar going well until Bob Jane went and pissed off people in the media....and then without coverage...and sponsors, the thing just fell over?

G'day guys.

I am one of the new owners of AUSCAR Racing Pty Ltd, the former business of Mr Bob Jane himself. AUSCAR and Sportsman racing is a class of Australian motorsport that has largely been forgotten about and we intend to change this.

We are currently working on a proposal that may see AUSCAR and Sportsman race cars return to the track in a series that will have the cars at 3 race tracks in 2 states. This is only a proposal and we have quite a few hoops to jump, but we are determined to see this class of racing return. We anticipate between 10 and 15 cars initially, but hope that this will increase as we draw closer and we are able to say YES, this is happening.   :crossed:  Fingers Crossed  :crossed:

CVMotorsport.com has what is probably the best and most likely the only real discussion and information on the cars, the events and the drivers. We welcome everyone's input and look forward to the possibility of being able to bring back these cars.

Cheers
Daryl

Interesting concept Daryl.
Is the proposal for "historic" Auscars or for a revival of the class with new build cars.
Calder Park and AIR?

Oldtony,

initially we are hoping to get the historic cars back out there but we are also considering an updated version ..........

Our primary goal is to get the old cars back out there, we are not having much luck with 2 of the tracks for the events we are considering however they have expressed some interest if we want to do something at smaller events initially. We are also going to be talking with another track in the coming weeks ...... fingers crossed.

I'm from the US, so idk that much about AUSCAR, aside from it being your version of NASCAR. Is AUSCAR going to run multiple races on multiple kinds of racetracks? Sorry if that was a dumb question.

Well in Australia theres only one banked Nascar track, Caldar Park Thunderdome. I was out there a few months ago, the whole place is very run down, the track is breaking up. Massive dollers will need to be spent and i cant see it ever happening.

They also used to run another small sort of oval track at AIR, that place is currently not open, hasn't been for a few years. Both place are owned by the same person.

They also ran the odd road course.

Sounds a lot like Dover Motorsports, which owned former Nascar tracks like Gateway, Memphis, and Nashville Fairgrounds, and current Nascar tracks Nashville Superspeedway and Dover Downs.

Good News people  :wOOt:

I am currently putting together a "fun day" for Aussie NASCAR, AUSCAR, Sportsman and HQ's at the Thunderdome ...... yep THE THUNDERDOME!

It is only a fun day to encourage the cars back out and hopefully develop a small historic series. I have been discussing this with Calder for about 4 months now and we have a date in November THIS YEAR!

Things are happening and hopefully we will also be holding an event in Adelaide next year too  ;) I have been and visited the venue, spoken with the manager and now need to talk with the owners .......... I am looking at August 4 2012 so if you are in Adelaide ........... something special will hopefully be happening soon  :crossed:

There is a group on a particular popular social media site ........... search for AUSCAR Racing  B)

Cheers
Daryl

That's some good news for those who loved the oval racing in Australia.

So what is the Thunderdome track surface like these days ? I heard it wasn't too pretty.
