Oran Park R.I.P (Disturbing Pictures)
« on: February 08, 2010, 07:48:48 pm »
Not my pictures, found them at another forum but very disturbing pictures, so sad to see it finally go. It's not like we didn't see it coming, but to visually see it gone is something indescribable for me.

Yeah, had spotted those pictures the other day. :(

I can remember years ago when I was in the old Datsun Drivers Club, and the club would either be invited to or actually run Super Sprint days there and at the old Amaroo Park. They were great old days of going over the dog leg, and then coming through the corner on to the straight millimetres from the concrete wall.

The old days turns one and two had solid walls effectively on the edge of the track, and the same with the corner before you went across the bridge.

Sadly we won't get these sorts of tracks back again.

This is a real shame for Australian Motorsport who will be next to fall under that???

It's a shame that Oran Park has to be torn up like that i would not like to be one of the workers touring up that track!

It's a damn shame alright. All that history flushed away. Thanks for bringing these pictures to our attention.

Disturbing indeed.  As I've said, I'm an American living in the United States, and it's just sad that this track is now basically ransacked.  I'm saddened this very unique Australian track is not only a fading memory, but also just... gone.  I'm sad.  Thankfully with PC games and video games, we can relive Oran Park as long as we like.

In some of the pic's it looks like they are demolishing the pit facilitys. (Drove past yesterday and half of them are gone)
I was under the impression that they had been sold to NZ for one of their tracks??

rFactor has a track which is called Oran Park LiDAR, it was laser scanned and is almost perfectly accurate to what Oran Park WAS like. In my opinion, all the undulations are so close to being perfect it's amazing (I would call them perfect, but i'm sure there's slight differences).

Anyway, it's good to see that we have a realistic version of Oran Park for a game. I have also got about 4 hours of home video footage that I took in the closing race meets.

You know it is a plain shame that they couldn't have left most of the track surface as it was, and had them as suburban streets.

Obviously they'd have to snip sections out in order to made the 'shoebox' sized house blocks, and intersections in those streets, but basically the 'guts' of the track left behind to show where it once was.

Clearly it wouldn't be Oran Park race circuit anymore, but you would then see where it once was, and how it ran. The fact that you'd have road intersections and the track disappearing in to house blocks, it couldn't be used for hooning as some might say.

You could cruise around to say the old dog leg, and be able to say that's where it used to be, and the basics of that corner would be there, but perhaps now it is a roundabout or 'T' intersection in the development.

This is my exact thoughts, I completely agree. We were hoping that they'd leave the main layout of the track in place and put in "Plant boxes" etc to avoid speeding and round abouts etc. But it's such a shame, all Oran Park Raceway gets is a sculpture to show where the start finish line was (I bet they'll just put it anywhere). It's such a shame, and to this day I still can't really believe that it isn't there.

You ought to get someone with a accurate gps, and log the positions of the certain parts of the track, and then visit the place after it's all finished and see where they 'think' things were. ;)
